A Harvard Business School graduate with an MBA in corporate finance, Alton Delane has advised the Raleigh/Durham-area offices of Dashible and Emissary since spring of 2019. Outside of the professional arena, Alton Delane has a long history of community involvement that includes serving as a blood donation manager with the American Red Cross.
Although donation recommendations and regulations vary from state to state, the American Red Cross maintains an extensive list of common whole blood donation restrictions. In terms of donor age, most states require individuals to be at least 17 years old. Some states allow 16-year-olds to donate, but they must obtain and present a written record of parental consent.
While all people must weigh at least 110 pounds to donate whole blood, donors younger than 18 years of age may have to meet additional weight requirements. For example, boys and girls 4'11" tall must weigh at least 114 and 142 pounds, respectively. They also face strict height restrictions. Boys and girls shorter than 4'10' are not eligible to become whole blood donors.
